Could CoRoT-7b and Kepler-10b be remnants of evaporated gas or ice giants?

We present thermal mass loss calculations over evolutionary time scales for the investigation if the smallest transiting rocky exoplanets CoRoT-7b (∼1.68REarth) and Kepler-10b (∼1.416REarth) could be remnants of an initially more massive hydrogen-rich gas giant or a hot Neptune-class exoplanet. We apply a thermal mass loss formula which yields results that are comparable to hydrodynamic loss models. Our approach considers the effect of the Roche lobe, realistic heating efficiencies and a radius scaling law derived from observations of hot Jupiters. Impact of forest management on threatened epiphytic macrolichens: Evidence from a Mediterranean mixed oak forest (Italy)

Abstract: Forest management practices may heavily affect epiphytic cryptogams. This study was conceived in March 2016, as soon as we were informed about an authorized logging for timber within a Mediterranean mixed oak forest in Tuscany (central Italy), which threatened a large population of the forest macrolichen Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm., composed of hundreds of fertile thalli. Lobaria pulmonaria is often used as an ecological indicator of high quality habitats hosting rare lichens, and in general, cryptogams worthy of conservation. Viewing the Sun as an X-ray star

The Sun is the late-type star we can study with the highest level of detail. In the interpretation of stellar data, therefore, it is often assumed that the physical processes of the coronae of late-type stars are similar to those of the solar corona, i.e. the "solar-stellar analogy". In order to investigate the validity of this assumption, we have started a program to study systematically the Sun as an X-ray star. Our program aims to explore how far the solar model can be applied to other stars. Adaptive physiological water conservation explains hypertension and muscle catabolism in experimental chronic renal failure

Abstract Aim We have reported earlier that a high salt intake triggered an aestivation‐like natriuretic‐ureotelic body water conservation response that lowered muscle mass and increased blood pressure. Here, we tested the hypothesis that a similar adaptive water conservation response occurs in experimental chronic renal failure. Binary evolution of PSR J1713+0747

PSR J1713+0747 is a binary millisecond radio pulsar with a long orbital period (Porb ∼ 68 d) and a very low neutron star mass (M NS = 1.3 ± 0.2 M⊙). We simulate the evolution of this binary system with an accurate numerical code, which keeps into account both the evolution of the primary and of the whole binary system. We show that strong ejection of matter from the system is fundamental to obtain a mass at the end of the evolution that is within 1 - σ from the observed one, but propeller effects are almost negligible in such a system, where the accretion rate is always near to the Eddington limit. Thermal conduction and modeling of static stellar coronal loops

We have modeled stellar coronal loops in static conditions for a wide range of loop length, plasma pressure at the base of the loop and stellar surface gravity, so as to describe physical conditions that can occur in coronae of stars ranging from low mass dwarfs to giants as well as on a significant fraction of the Main-Sequence stars.

On the deceleration of Fanaroff–Riley Class I jets: mass loading by stellar winds

Jets in low-luminosity radio galaxies are known to decelerate from relativistic speeds on parsec scales to mildly or sub-relativistic speeds on kiloparsec scales. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain this effect, including strong reconfinement shocks and the growth of instabilities (both leading to boundary-layer entrainment) and mass loading from stellar winds or molecular clouds. We have performed a series of axisymmetric simulations of the early evolution of jets in a realistic ambient medium to probe the effects of mass loading from stellar winds using the code Ratpenat. Signatures of pulsations and mass loss in the spectra of post-AGB stars

AbstractThe results of high-resolution spectroscopy and radial velocity monitoringa are presented for selected post-AGB candidate stars. Time series of high-resolution spectra for HD235858 shows spliting of low-excitation atomic lines and significant changes in the intensity of C2 and CN lines originated in the extended atmosphere significantly affected by pulsations and outflow. Mass ejection was confirmed for cool R CrB candidate stars DY Per, V1983 Cyg, and V2074 Cyg.

Discussion – Periodic variations and asteroseismology of active OB stars

AbstractWe summarize the discussion held after the session on periodic variations and asteroseismology. The session not only included seven talks, but as well thirty excellent posters were shown. It was impossible to summarize all these in the available frame of a discussion, and so this work focuses on very few sub-topics only mentioned in the actual discussion session. These topics were the relation of pulsation and turbulence, pulsation in close binaries, the observed photometric variability, the connection of pulsations and outburst, and bipolar flows.
